Piana degli Albanesi (Palermo)
The Easter celebrations of the Albanian community Piana degli Albanesi, held all over the town, feature sacred music and Greek-Orthodox rites. On Palm Sunday (March 28), the archbishop enters the town on horseback, reenacting the arrival of Christ in Jerusalem. Four days later, on Holy Thursday (April 1), the priest impersonating St Peter is washed by the archbishop, the most sacred event of the festivities. The sacred musical pieces performed on Good Friday are not to be missed, particularly those narrating the passion and death of Christ. The Saturday (April 2) preceding Easter Sunday features full immersion baptisms, performed by priests wearing white robes symbolising new life. The festivities end on Easter Sunday (April 4 at 10.30 h) in the cathedral of San Demetrio, where all believers are reunited for the Mensa, a feast organised by all members of the community.
This is a chance to get to know the Albanian community and to see how its traditions harmoniously survive alongside traditional Sicilian beliefs.

Adrano (Catania)
I Diavulazzi di Pasqua or La Diavolata. The rites of the settimana santa in Adrano have a more than 250 year old tradition. Several processions take place from to Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday the Association del Rosario represents the Via Crucis. Thursday before Easter (April 1), a procession takes place, called Cristo alla Colonna. On Good Friday (April 2) two processions take place one in the morning, dedicated to the Madonna Addolorata and in the evening the one dedicated to Cristo Morto. During the night from Saturday to Easter Sunday the resurrection takes place. In the morning (April 4) the statues of Christ, of the Madonna and of the Angel will be brought to the Piazza Umberto where the Diavolata, the struggle between the evil and the good takes place, ending up with the victory of peace. This tradition goes back to a text called La Resurrezione written by Don Anselmo Laudani in 1752

Prizzi (Palermo)
Il Ballo dei Diavoli in Prizzi. Dance of the Devils. The cosmic struggle between good and evil rages in the remote village of Prizzi, in the picturesque heart of Sicily, spilling out into the streets every Easter. The Dance of the Devils is performed by villagers wearing large and terrifying iron masks. The locals' behaviour represents the saturnalia of evil forces who are indulging in bad behaviour after Christ's crucifixion. Death and the devils rampage through the village to collect their dues: the souls of the passers-by. Having attempted in vain to prevent the meeting of the resurrected Christ and the Virgin Mary, however, the devils are defeated in the afternoon, and order is restored.
This archaic festival has medieval origins; the re-enactments on Easter Sunday are only the culmination of rituals spanning the whole of the Holy Week leading up to Easter. On Palm Sunday afternoon (March 28) a villager representing Jesus enters the town riding a horse. On the Thursday (April 1), the last supper is commemorated in the churches, and on Good Friday (April 2), a procession takes a chalk effigy of Jesus up to the Calvary, which is reached at midday on the dot. At 6.00 h on Easter Sunday (April 4) the forces of evil come to claim the town; two devils and Death appear before the church and bow, maybe as an act of contrition on the part of the actors. Then they haunt each quarters of the town, trying in vain to prevent the meeting of Jesus with the Virgin Mary, and are slain at every turn by angels.

When it is passed by, the shopkeepers on Corso Umberto continue with their business and switch on the lights again.

Piazza del Carmine - Pietraperzia (Enna)
Good Friday celebrations of Pietraperzia, featuring a spectacular procession.
A fercolo (Saint's relics carrier) is placed in the middle of the square along with a huge wooden pole. Attached to the pole are 30 metre-long swaddling linen bands, a symbol of devotion, which are used to raise the statue of Christ. The statue is then placed on the fercolo, moved by over 500 participants, thus starting the procession. The pageant offers the chance to experience a fascinating event amidst beautiful medieval architecture.

April 2 to 4
Town center - Palermo
Easter celebrations in Palermo take place all over town and feature impressive street processions and re-enactments of the Last Supper. There are three splendid processions on Good Friday, dating back several centuries. The procession of the Cocchieri used to be seen by the local aristocrats as an opportunity to show off their power and wealth. Thirty-two participants take turns in carrying the statues of Christ and Madonna, escorted by people wearing original medieval armour. The procession departs from the Chiesa della Madonna dell'Itria at around 14.00 h, though it is advisable to check the time with the tourist office a few days in advance. The other processions dedicated to Maria Addolorata and Santa Maria Soledad are similar, finishing late at night. The times and places of departure can again be checked with the local tourist office.

Gangi (Palermo)
Easter celebrations in Gangi involve various rituals and processions throughout the Holy Week, though the most interesting event happens on Easter Sunday, when an unusual rivalry between saints takes place. Devotees of the Madonna compete against those who venerate Jesus. The peaceful competition consists of creating the best decorations in the streets in the centre of town, near the cathedral. They assume the shape of arches, bizarrely constructed of bread, vegetables and other foodstuffs.
